Detomidine hydrochloride是具有镇痛作用的镇静剂。α2-肾上腺素能激动剂产生剂量依赖性的镇静和镇痛作用，并通过激活α2儿茶酚胺受体介导，从而引起负反馈反应，从而减少兴奋性神经递质的产生。
